Sovereign Hill and the Eureka Centre in Ballarat and the Central Deborah Gold Mine in Bendigo all offer a fascinating insight into life above and below the ground during the 1850s and 1860s. The ornate architecture is a visible expression of the wealth gleaned from the goldmines during the 1850s. Every city and town in the region has at least one monument to the grand ambitions of people whose legacy lives long after they are forgotten.
