About the Dandenongs

The Dandenong Ranges are richly endowed with some of the most beautiful countryside in Victoria. Towering trees, verdant valleys, fern forests, parks & gardens, are just a slice of the spectacular scenery on offer.

An enjoyable introduction is a ride on Puffing Billy, Australia's oldest steam railway, which travels through the thick forests & lush fern-filled gullies of the Dandenongs. Also in the Dandenongs is the William Ricketts Sanctuary. Set discreetly among rocks and fern gardens you'll find kiln-fired clay sculptures of Aboriginal figures - works inspired by Ricketts' time living among Aboriginal people in central Australia. There's also the Alfred Nicholas Gardens which is known for its birdlife & stunning blend of native & exotic trees plus bushwalks, waterfalls & a picturesque lake.

On arrival at Attic House, you will be welcomed with home-cooked afternoon tea on the shady verandahs or in the Guest Lounge beside the fire. Next morning, enjoy a mouthwatering breakfast in the dining room or on the verandahs - whichever you prefer. There are 10 restaurants within easy reach.

The Dandenong Ranges are great for walkers wanting to explore the Australian bush. The mountain location and fresh climate makes the hills gardens very special. Many, such as the internationally renowned National Rhododendron Garden, are open for inspection. Your hosts at Attic House will provide you with a copy of their notes on "The Best Things to do in the Dandenongs".

A short distance from the accommodation at Attic House are the William Ricketts Sanctuary, a multitude of craft shops and tearooms, the world-famous Puffing Billy Steam Railway, and a panoramic view of Melbourne from the summit of Mount Dandenong, all of which have made the Dandenong Ranges a favourite destination for many generations of Melburnians!
